Re: Digital Scanners

In response to this from Albert Lang:

Most of what
we would scan would probably be from bound text to then print out on
acid free paper and use as a substitute for the original (church
minutes, etc.). We would also look to copy photographs and possibly
things needing color. In time some of these things we would probably
want to put on a web page (like the miutes) or possibly a CD? It sounds
like there is not one product that can do all of this.

I've also been looking for something "that can do all of this." My problem
is that while we have a really good color scanner, its maximum image area
is 12" x 17". I have to capture images of color comics from newspapers up
to 104 years old, and these broadsheets are typically 16.5" x
21.5". Frequently, a single comic strip occupies the entire page, minus
gutters.

A digital camera is the obvious answer, but there is also the problem of
image storage. The digitized images must be TIFFs, because I've tried
JPEGs and they don't capture the necessary level of detail. Some digital
cameras have high-capacity memory cards, but these are not meant for
long-term storage, just for upload to a hard drive or server. Imagine
telling your library's IT department you'll be needing server space for
2,000 or so high-resolution images.

For these reasons, I'm considering buying one of the new Sony digital
cameras that writes straight to a 3" CD-R. The CD's could consitute an
image library which could later be printed off onto acid-free paper with
archival inks. (You know, when Santa Claus drops off a color laser printer
and three bottomless tanks of 100-year inks on my doorstep.) And no, I'm
not expecting CD-Rs to last 100 years, just to serve as relatively low-cost
storage space for high-quality images for, say, 15 years.

Has anyone else been thinking along these lines? Anyone tried one of the
new cameras yet?
