THE BANCROFT LIBRARY
HEAD, TECHNICAL SERVICES
Associate Librarian / Librarian
$48,984 - $82,008 per annum, depending upon qualifications

The Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, is one of the largest and most heavily used libraries of manuscripts, rare books, and special collections in the United States. As the primary center of special collections within the library system at Berkeley, Bancroft supports major research and reference activities and plays a leading role in the development of research collections. Bancroft holdings include over 500,000 volumes, 35,000 linear feet of manuscripts, 3,500,000 photographs and other pictorial materials, 72,000 microforms, and 23,000 maps. Additional information regarding The Library and The Bancroft Library is available on the web at: http://lib.berkeley.edu/ and http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/BANC/.

Bancroft Technical Services (BTS) is the unit responsible for all of the technical operations of the Bancroft Library. BTS employs approximately 35 career and non-career staff and has operating expenses of approximately $1.5 million per year. BTS operations include: acquisitions, cataloging (original and copy), archival, manuscripts, and pictorial collections processing, and digital archiving. BTS is responsible for acquiring, preserving, and providing access to the library's collections of printed materials, manuscripts, photographs, magnetic media, and other materials in a variety of formats. BTS takes a leadership role in setting national standards for technical processing, digital access, and digital archiving of rare books, archives, and special collections materials. A significant percentage of BTS processing and digital archiving projects are funded by grants or donors; this requires BTS actively to partner with other campus and library units and with a variety of institutions throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, the state, and the
nation.

Responsibilities:

1. RARE BOOKS, SPECIAL COLLECTIONS, AND ARCHIVAL MANAGEMENT: The Head of BTS exercises leadership at The Bancroft Library, in the Berkeley University Libraries, with the UC Berkeley campus administration, and within the University of California system in the technical handling of collections of rare books, manuscripts, pictorial, and archival materials. The BTS Head also plays a leadership role within Bancroft, on campus, regionally, and nationally in the development and implementation of standards-based solutions to special collections and archival access problems, using both electronic and traditional methods. The BTS Head is responsible for assuring that Bancroft adheres to all national archival and bibliographic description and access standards; that BTS operations are appropriately coordinated with those of the University Library; and that BTS shares expertise with and advises other library and campus groups on the development of joint projects to provide access to collections outside Bancroft.

2. DEPARTMENTAL MANAGEMENT: The Head of BTS is responsible for the overall management and supervision of The Bancroft Library's rare books, archival, and special collections technical services operation. The Head of BTS plans, implements, and evaluates operations; establishes policies and procedures relating to archival processing, cataloging and related bibliographic control functions; sets
priorities for processing in collaboration with the Bancroft Collections Advisory Group (BCOL); coordinates preservation activities; works closely with the Head of Bancroft Public Services to insure optimal access to the collections; devises strategies for seeking and expending state and extramural funding; and sets goals
for BTS which will achieve the optimum levels of technical processing for materials in all formats held by The Bancroft Library. The incumbent supervises a staff of approximately 35 FTE, determining appropriate staff assignments and allocations to achieve BTS goals and overseeing the training, evaluation, and scheduling of all departmental personnel. The Head of BTS prepares and manages a departmental
budget of approximately $1.5 million per year of both state and extramural funds, and assists the curatorial staff and other library leaders in developing grant proposals to meet preservation, access, and digital archiving needs of the Library's and the University's research collections.

The position reports to the Deputy Director of The Bancroft Library and serves as a member of the Bancroft management team in the Management Advisory Group (BMAG), the Collections Advisory Group (BCOL), and the Budget Committee (BCOM); the University Library management team on Roundtable and other appropriate library councils and taskforces; and the California Digital Library's management team on the Online Archive of California's (OAC) advisory groups.

3. DIGITAL ARCHIVING: The Head of BTS oversees the use of advanced technology to establish administrative and intellectual control over Bancroft collections; the integration of digital technology into The Bancroft Library's traditional archival practices; and BTS participation in the OAC, including BTS implementation of Encoded Archival Description (EAD). The Head of BTS also supervises The Bancroft's
Director of Digital Archives Development, who is responsible for managing the Library's EAD and related digital archiving projects.

Professional contributions beyond the primary job, e.g., publications, active participation in University and professional organizations, and other research and creative activity are required for advancement within the Librarian series. Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, initiative, and flexibility.
