The Martin P. Catherwood Library, the nation?s most comprehensive library
for workplace issues, seeks candidates for the position of Assistant
Archivist - Technical Processes Archivist in its Kheel Center for
Labor Management Documentation and Archives. Founded in 1949, the Kheel
Center is the special collections unit of the Catherwood Library and
houses 17,000 cubic feet of manuscripts, extensive audio-visual holdings,
rare books, and memorabilia concentrated in labor and industrial
relations and management thought. The Center staff is composed of 4
archivists and 2.5 fte support staff. The
Catherwood Library and the Center serves Cornell?s School of Industrial
and Labor Relations (52 faculty, 700 undergraduates, and 100 graduate
students) and others on campus, as well as a varied external clientele
beyond the campus (corporate and union researchers, government analysts,
lawyers, lobbyists, historians, reporters, international scholars,
etc.). Kheel Center staff currently responds to between 1200-1400
research inquiries a year.
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Kheel Center Director, administers the
intake, preservation and processing of textual archival and manuscript
collections. Catalogs manuscript and archival collections.
Organizes, supervises, coordinates and assigns duties to processing
student assistants. Develops and edits archival finding aids for
textual collections. Administers the ILR School?s record management
program and the records center of the ILR School. This is a regular
full-time position expected to be filled at the academic rank of
Assistant Archivist.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Advises the Kheel Director on proposed changes of policy and
procedures for the Center's technical processes operations.
Examines collections and makes decisions as to processing procedures to
be followed in consultation with Kheel Director. Supervises student
assistants in arranging, listing, describing and preserving individual
collections. Coordinates stack space planning including shifting of
collections. Catalogs collections in RLIN and downloads records to
Cornell on-line catalog. Upgrades existing finding aids to achieve
compatibility with EAD format. Edits finding aids (10 to 300 pages
in length) produced by student assistants and writes important finding
aids as time permits. Maintains collection accession records and
performs the various tasks associated with the, accessioning,
deaccessioning, and preservation of collections and archives. Must
occasionally travel to inventory and pack records prior to
accessioning. Produces exhibits, attends professional staff
meetings, and serves on library committees. Other duties as
assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
-- Advanced degree
from archival training graduate program and/or MLS with archival
concentration required.
-- Graduate or
undergraduate American history or ILR coursework highly desired.
Skills and Abilities:
--Superior analytical, writing and organizing skills required.
--Ability to lift boxes weighing between 30-60 lbs. required.
--Strong interpersonal communication skills, flexibility and ability to
adapt to a rapidly changing environment required.
--Familiarity with manuscript cataloging and EAD practices highly
desirable.
-- Substantial interest in technological issues relating to archival
management and some experience with developing applications in
Microsoft Access highly desirable.
--Fluent English language skills required.
Experience:
Experience in archival practice highly desirable.
