Re: Poster question

Hi Joanne,
I would not attempt to unmount a mounted poster. Most likely it was dry mounted on a dry press and that would be difficult to remove. I would have a professional conservator look at it.
If you do display it, there is ultravilot light inhibiting plexi that can be purchased to minimize the effects of UV, although visible light can be damaging as well. If you do display it, make sure that the glass does not come in direct contact with the poster. A layer of Mylar Type D encapsulation film or a window matte can prevent damage from direct contact with glass or plexi. Changes in humidity and temperature can make the glass stick to the paper of the poster.
Do you have any large-format copying firms that could possibly duplicate it? It would be far better for the life of the poster to display a copy rather than an original, especially if there are only a few in existence.
Good luck.

Hello All,

We have a poster from one of the performances of our orchestra at an outside
venue--so we did not produce the advertising materials--that came to us
already mounted on foam core. It is large--about 5'x3'. There were only
two and both were mounted. I'd like to save it as we have only a few of
these types of posters.

One way would be to just hang it on the wall. But then there is the concern
about light damage. Is there anything I can do to minimize this? Storing
it away in the Archives would be problematical--like everyone else I have
very little room. Can things mounted on foam core be "unmounted?" Any
other ideas for me?

Thanks.
