Re: RAIN 12/14: 5Ok (Bernardo Tapes)

Folks -

An interesting situation here. I have forwarded this posting to the Senior
Archivist responsible for the Ministry of the Solicitor General's records
at the Archives of Ontario.

The tapes are, I believe, scheduled though I do not know what the final
disposition is...if they are not scheduled, it will require the permission
of the Archivist of Ontario to destroy them.

There are a number of issues here, including but not limited to the
victims' families sensibilities. It is my understanding that, had the
tapes been accesssible before Karla Homolka made her deal, her situation
would be considerably different. It will be a case of the Ontario
Provincial Police and the Archives of Ontario making the final decision, as
the Minister states, "when it's clear the tapes would serve no further
purpose to the administration of justice." This decision, however, should
be made in accordance with established policy and existing schedules.

I'll keep you "posted" on developments.

Mark
