My name is Joe Gillette, and I'm the archivist
at the Orange County Regional History Center in Orlando, FL. I have a question
I'm hoping someone out there has experience with and can give me some pointers.
My boss has recently informed me that when we catalog new accessions to our
collection (this goes for objects, papers, and photos), we now need to provide
some kind of monetary value to the item(s). I have absolutely no idea how to do
this. It's something to which I have never had any exposure. How does one attach
a monetary value to archival papers? Is there a standard set of rules I should
use? If so, what are they, and is there any kind of published sourcebook out
there somewhere I could obtain, similar to the kind of resources museum
curators, collectors, auctioneers, and insurance appraisers might use? If there
isn't, what kind of general guidelines are used within the profession to attach
a monetary value to archival papers? Like I said, I have no experience with such
things, and I'm hoping someone out there can help me out. Thanks
much.
