Re: cell phone use in Archives Research Rooms

I have been very interested in the cell phone discussion. I personally
don't feel, as many seem to, that they are the most horrible things to
ever walk into a reading room. If there is no one in the reading room
but one patron, I actually don't care if it is on or not. If there is
more than one person and the phone rings, I ask them to take their call
outside. People have phones for a variety of reasons.

What about staff members with pagers or phones? Do they set their
devices on vibrate? I carry my phone at all times. I don't get deluged
with calls, but the ones that come through are important like the one
last week that was in regards to my son's daycare closing. If my phone
had been off, I would not have received the call as quickly as I did.
My phone is old and does not have a vibrate mode. When it rings in the
reading room, I excuse myself and then tell the person calling that I
will call them back unless it is a dire emergency. I have had no
problem so far.

(My personal opinions. These may or may not reflect the policie or
opinions of the University.)
