MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES

Position:       Head of Special Collections and
University Archives

Reports to:     Dean of Libraries
Scope:       This senior position is one of eleven
members of the
Libraries' Administrative Staff Committee. The
head is responsible for
planning, organizing, budgeting, developing, and
leading the department in
its primary responsibility to support the research
and teaching needs of
the Marquette community. The position calls for an
ambitious, innovative,
and energetic professional enthusiastic about
encouraging the use of the
collections through reference services, classroom
instruction, finding
aids, descriptive bibliographies, and the
Library's Web site

Setting:        Marquette University is an urban,
independent, Catholic, Jesuit
institution, comprised of 15 colleges and
professional programs, offering
35 Master's and 15 doctoral-level degrees, with a
student population of
approximately 10,900. The University Libraries
have a strong service
orientation, carried out by 29 librarians and 41
support staff.
The Archives, founded in 1961, currently occupies
14,000 sq.ft. in the
lower level of Memorial Library. Archival and
manuscript holdings of the
department total 11,500 cu. ft. with collecting
strengths including J.R.R.
Tolkien, 20th-century Catholic social action, and
the history of the
Catholic Church in Native America. In addition to
the head, the archives is
staffed by three full-time archivists, two
full-time archival technical
assistants, and approximately 12 undergraduate and
graduate students
working about 6,000 hours/yr. Web site contains

Marquette is nearing the construction phase for a
$55 million library and
learning center, which is expected to house a
significant portion of the
archival holdings, and this position will play a
central role in shaping
the setting and service configuration for special
collections in the new
environment.

Specific responsibilities include:

1. Planning and providing services appropriate to
current and potential
users of the department's collections.
2. Recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising
departmental staff.
3. Participating in the work of the Administrative
Staff in setting and
achieving objectives supporting the Libraries
goals and the University's
mission as a Jesuit, Catholic, and urban
university.
4. Representing the department with outside groups
and individuals:
promoting use of the collections; developing and
maintaining effective
relationships with donors and prospective donors.
5. Participating in University, scholarly, and
professional activities and
keeping current on developments in library and
archival management. Other
duties as assigned, including service on library
committees.

Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS or ACA archival
certification and
relevant subject Master's degree.  Supervisory
experience; professional
activity in archival organizations; knowledge of
information technology as
applied to special collections processing and a
commitment to its
application as a way to promote access to the
collections.  Strong
communication skills for effective interaction
with colleagues, faculty,
and outside scholars.    Preferred: A second
Master's degree in a subject
area.

Salary: Competitive and commensurate with
qualifications and experience.
