WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT

"Processing Literary Manuscripts"

Presented by the Manuscript Unit of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript
Library, Yale University

Saturday, March 31, 2001

This is a one-day course focusing on literary archives. The day starts with
an introduction to the world of literary manuscripts, along with an
overview of the "modern" (ca. 1830-2000) creative and publication processes
responsible for the many different artifacts which make up literary
archives. After a mid-day break for lunch (catered on Beinecke's
mezzanine), the session will continue with archivists speaking about
physical formats and intellectual control. The afternoon continues with a
hands-on exercise which will allow participants to decide on approaches to
describing a group of archival materials. The day wraps up with a panel
discussion on some of the more curious challenges to literary archival work.
This workshop is intended for archivists who work with literary manuscripts
(particularly those who have not had formal training) and desire to learn
methods for describing and handling them.

There are no registration, tuition, or materials fees for this workshop.
Participants are responsible for their own transportation and lodging.
Class size is limited to 20. Preference will be given to applicants who
have direct responsibility for manuscript materials. A further limit of one
person per institution may also be imposed.

To request a brochure with a registration form, send your mailing address
to: diana.smith@yale.edu by January 10, 2001 and note in the subject line:
"Workshop request."
