Peabody Essex Museum, Phillips Library, Salem, MA

The Phillips Library is a rare book and manuscript repository with
approximately 400,000 volumes and 5,000 linear feet of manuscript material.

Processing Archivist

Duties/Description:   The Processing Archivist will analyze a variety of
manuscript collections to determine their intellectual content, organization,
and description needs.  Create finding aids and other reference tools.
Perform original collection and item-level descriptive and subject
cataloging, using the USMARC format and current descriptive standards
including LCSH and Hensen's APPM.  Provide all necessary accessioning and
perform basic preservation of manuscript collections.    Participate in the
ongoing retrospective conversion of the library's card catalog.  Prepare
electronic finding aids according to established local practice.  This is a
full-time, two year position, with competitive salary and benefits.

Qualifications:  M.S. from an ALA-accredited library and information science
program, with formal training in archival theory and practice.  Two years
relevant professional experience required.  A second master's degree in
American history preferred.  Experience processing and cataloging historical
manuscripts and archival collections.  Familiarity with MARC coding and
national descriptive standards.  Strong interpersonal and organizational
skills and an attention to detail.  Computer skills, database management, and
OCLC online cataloging skills are required.
