Re: Important Message-Upcoming Change in Reply Setting

I would like to add my name to the "list" of those who think that the main
value to the listserv is the answers and responses. Communicating
information about archives and exchanging professional information with
hundreds simultaneously is what the listserv is all about. The distractions
are minor.

Imagine the process otherwise. You see a question for which you would like
the answer(s) to or to review the responses. So you e-mail the person who
asked the question and ask them to forward you the responses, or ask the
list that whoever answers to cc you. so then up get a batch of responses
[HOPEFULLY]. Meanwhile, a couple of days pass by, and a new response is
sent to the list, but that person has missed seeing your name requesting the
responses. And this is the one with the webpage or citation that helps you
with your problem. Maybe I have missed something, but isn't this the way it
would be.

Keep it the way it is now. A list of messages, questions and answers to
which you can serve yourself.

As a recent subscriber to the list, I agree with Thomas' comments. If the
only things that appear on the list in the future are the questions and
announcements about public offerings, I will probably drop myself from the
list.

During the trial period, the value of the list declined considerably,
because the answers to inquiries were not posted in the listserve. as other
have said, I subscribe to the listserve for the answers more than the
questions.

The "out-of-office" replies and rare personal replies are negatives but a
small price to pay for a more useful and informative list.
