summer internship at Yale University



The Manuscripts and Archives Department of the Yale University Library invites
applications for its 2001 summer internship program. The program is designed to
provide a graduate student planning a career in the archives profession with an
opportunity to obtain practical experience in appraisal, arrangement,
description, preservation, and other aspects of archival work.

Responsibilities: Appraise, arrange, and describe a twelve linear foot addition
to the papers of the Alsop Family, a Connecticut family whose activities are
documented from the mid-eighteenth to the twentieth century and include the
syndicated columnists, Joseph and Stewart Alsop.  As time permits, appraise an
addition to the Maurice Rea Davie Papers, a Yale sociologist whose interests
included child welfare and immigration.  Perform other duties and participate
in staff and working group meetings.

Length: 10 weeks @ 37.5 hours/week, during the months May-August.

Requirements: Intern must be enrolled in advanced degree programs in archival
administration, library and information studies, or related fields. Archives
course work at the advanced degree level. Excellent oral and written
communications skills and ability to work in a team setting.

Preferred: Undergraduate and/or graduate courses in American history and
culture.

Application procedure: Applicants should submit a letter describing their
interest in the archival profession, a resume, a list of courses completed or
underway in the advanced degree program, and the names and contact information
