moldy & mildewy photo album

Hi all!

We have just come upon a great find here (at least for us) - a photo album
with original photographs that correspond to a group of glass plate
negatives that we are currently cataloging. The catch: It has about 80 years
worth of dust, dirt, mold, mildew on it. :) It is a scrapbook-type format
where the photos are adhered to black paper pages. I would love to be able
to use it for the info. on the glass plate negs, but to flip through the
pages sends us into coughing fits.

The question I am posing to the list is: What's the best way to clean this
off with the least health risks so we can at least flip through it to see
all the photos? (We'll worry about how to best save these photos at another
time.)

One problem: We don't have a venting hood. (sorry - I don't know the proper
term) Because of this limitation, I'm guessing we'll have to wait till
spring thaw and a calm day to take it outside to clean, being sure to use
masks & lab coat & gloves. :) We don't have the funding for a hood at this
time, nor really the place to install one.

Thanks for your creative help! Please be gentle - we all have to adapt to
our situations from time to time, regardless of how less-than-ideal they may
be. :)
