Lecture: George Washington in Massachusetts

GENERAL WASHINGTON AT DORCHESTER HEIGHTS
PUBLIC LECTURE AT MASSACHUSETTS ARCHIVES

Saturday, February 3, 2001 at 10:30

Secretary of the Commonwealth William Francis Galvin announced today that
Stephen Kenney of the Massachusetts Archives staff will present "George
Washington in Massachusetts: Letters from the Archives", the first in a
monthly lecture series on Massachusetts history, on Saturday, February 3, at
10:30 am, at the Massachusetts Archives on Columbia Point in Dorchester.

Dr. Kenney's talk complements an exhibit at the Archives on display through
June, and tells the story of Washington's fortification of Dorchester
Heights and the events leading to the British evacuation of Boston on March
17, 1776.

The exhibit and lecture are based upon original documents in the
Massachusetts Archives collections, including bills for entertaining General
Washington and his staff, decoded messages from a British spy, and
Washington's secret orders for the occupation of Dorchester Heights.

Kenney holds a Ph.D. from Boston University and has taught at several area
colleges.

The program is free and open to the public. Parking is free, and the
building is handicap accessible. For additional information or a brochure
listing future lectures call 617-727-2816, or see our website at
