NARA assists Federal agencies in documenting their activities; publishes the Federal Register and other official documents; oversees Federal declassification policies; and makes grants supporting initiatives to document American history.

DUTIES:  The incumbent serves as an Archivist in a Presidential Library and has continuing responsibility for performing one or more of the following professional archival functions for a major segment, group, or collection of textual or non-textual historical materials:  arrangement, description, reference, preservation and rehabilitation, and screening and reviewing.  May also perform assignments in appraisal, accessioning, and disposal, documentary publications, exhibit preparation, and public programs.  Incumbent works under the general direction of a senior staff member.  Completed work is subject to review for soundness of judgment, adequacy of presentation, and adherence to professional standards.  Incumbent may supervise several other staff members in carrying out specific assignments.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Applicants will not be required to take a written examination, but will be rated on the extent and quality of their education and/or experience according to information provided in their application forms.  To be rated eligible, applicants must meet the Basic Requirement AND one of the Additional Requirements described below.

Basic Requirement:
Education:  Bachelor's degree, with a major that included 18 semester hours in the history of the United States and/or in American political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.
        OR
Combination of Education and Experience: At least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. 

Additional Requirement:
Specialized Experience:  One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level of the Federal service.  This experience must have equipped the applicant with the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position at the GS-11 grade level.  This must have been professional experience in archival science or in a directly related field of work such as history that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values.  The following are illustrative of kinds of experience that may meet the specialized experience requirement:  (1) Experience as an archivist in Federal, State, church, business, or other archives, or in manuscript depositories, or (2) experience of an archival nature that involved research in archival science or in a directly related field such as history, government, economics, political science, international relations or international law.
        OR
Education:  Three years of graduate level education, or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in history, economics, political science, public administration, or other field directly related to this position.
        OR	
Combination of Education and Experience:  A combination of graduate level education and GS-9 level specialized experience may be used to qualify for this position.  Only graduate education in excess of the first two years (36 semester hours) may be combined with experience under this standard.

In this booklet, you will be asked to provide information regarding your experience and education as it relates to this position.  All applicants must file their responses electronically or complete the Form C, Qualifications and
