Re: Ethics of Copies

We have been in the position of having copies from an institution in a
collection donated to our Archives. We are in California. The copied
material I received came from originals in a Benedictine Abbey in England.
I contacted them to tell them we had these copies from their archives. The
Abbot gave permission for the copies to be open for use. I have housed these
copies all together and written in the finding aid where they came from and
that the Abbot has given permission for use.

I think that something can be worked out between the institution with the
material and the town organization wanting to use copies. They can give
perferred citations on all copies indicating originals are in X archives.
Cooperation is certainly possible and helps the public find what they need.
The abbey and my archives have developed a good relationship and have helped
each other out with stuff to fill in the other's collection, or assist
researchers.
