POSITION: Media Archives Archivist

DEPARTMENT: Walter J. Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards
Collection

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

          The Media Archives Archivist is responsible to the Director
of the Walter J. Brown Media Archives and Peabody
          Awards Collection for the organization and inventory,
including web-based access, of the collections and for
          providing research assistance to a variety of patrons. The
Media Archives Archivist will specialize in the following
          collections: Georgia Folklore Collection, WSB Television
Newsfilm Collection, Southeastern Emmys, and the
          Arnold Michaelis Library of Living History, as well as new
collections. The Media Archives contains over 86,000
          television and radio titles and 5 million feet of newsfilm
in a variety of formats: 16mm and 35mm film, 16" radio
          transcription discs, 1/4" audiotape, and videotape in 2",
3/4", and Betacam formats. The Media Archives Archivist
          also assists the Director of the Walter J. Brown Media
Archives and Peabody Awards Collection in grantwriting
          and other fundraising projects, and in acquiring new
collections. The Archives is comprised of four professional
          and three staff positions. Some evening and/or weekend work
may be required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

          Provides access to the sound and moving image materials in the Media Archives by organizing, processing, and
          inventorying the collections. Inventories will be created electronically and made accessible through the Media
          Archives? web site.

          Provides reference assistance to faculty, students, producers, and other researchers using the collections.

          Promotes use of the collections by managing the Media Archives? web site.

          Supervises student assistants working on inventory and conservation projects and researchers? requests.

          Assists with development efforts by participating in grantwriting, working with donors and identifying potential
          donors.

          Increases the quality of individual contributions to the Department and enhances the regional and national status of
          the Libraries by participating in continuing education and professional development activities.

          Maintains flexibility and awareness of changes in the department and organization and contributes to the team
          effort by assuming other similar duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

          ALA-accredited MLS or Master?s degree with significant coursework in film, broadcasting, or communication
          studies; Experience working with film, video, and audio formats; Knowledge of audiovisual preservation and
          copyright issues; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, donors, and
          patrons; Effective oral and written communication skills; Strong organizational ability; Familiarity with database
          management, word processing, spreadsheet software, and SGML and HTML applications in an archival
          environment; Interest in grantwriting and other development activities.

BENEFITS: Standard benefits package includes life, health and disability insurance and mandatory participation in the state or
optional retirement system, and 21 days annual leave, plus 12 paid holidays. Salary minimum: $30,000, commensurate with
