Re: Baking Tapes

Particular runs of Ampex and Scotch tape often need to be baked in a
convection oven at about 130 degrees Farenheit for two to three hours if
they've been found to be suffering what's called "sticky-shed syndrome".
I've found it's almost always the black back-coated tape from the 1970s
forward. Aside from the problem of poor batches from the manufacturers,
storage conditions are a major factor for sticky-shed. Stored in high
humidity areas these tapes tend to absorb moisture and are impossible to
play unless baked. I've found that some tapes can be played more than
once for transferring after baking and others can be baked a second time.
The best thing, however, is to do your transfers immediately after the first
baking when the tape has cooled to room temperature.

I've never had to bake non-back-coated tape, i.e. early polyester or its
predecessor acetate.
