Re: Baking Tapes



i just mentioned this topic in a paper.

A tape afflicted with sticky-shed syndrome can be separated by baking it
minus the cassette housing, but the separation will only be temporary. Van
Bogart (1996, December) indicated that baking makes the sticky "goop" more
chemically compatible with the tape binder, so it can be reabsorbed into the
tape. Vogt-O'Connor recommended baking the tape in a 122° F oven for eight
hours. The tape should be copied within three days, before it becomes sticky
again.
