THE HOOVER INSTITUTION ARCHIVES
PROJECT ARCHIVIST

DESCRIPTION:   The Hoover Institution Archives seeks nominations and
applications for a Project Archivist to manage the processing, promotion,
and preservation of the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty corporate records
and broadcast archives, consisting of some 61,000 reels of broadcast tapes,
7.5 million pages of broadcast transcripts, and thousands of additional
documents generated by the various broadcast services of RFE and RL.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty is a private, international radio service
to Eastern Europe and Southeastern Europe, Russia, the Caucasus, Central
Asia and the Middle East funded by the U.S. Congress.  More than 35 million
listeners rely on RFE/RL's daily news, analysis and current affairs
programming to provide a coherent, objective account of events in their
region of the world.

The Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace is a public policy
research center devoted to the advanced study of domestic and international
affairs, founded at Stanford University in 1919 by Herbert Hoover, the 31st
President of the United States.  The Institution's Library and Archives,
with more than 1.6 million volumes and more than fifty million documents,
constitute one of the world's largest repositories of materials on
twentieth-century social, economic, and political change.

Under the direction of the Archivist, the successful applicant will be
responsible for the following duties:

* Determine the overall intellectual arrangement and description of the
collection, in consultation with the Associate Archivist.  Process sections
of the collection according to archival standards and practices and
following in-house guidelines.  Create in part and edit ultimate finding
aid to the collection.

* Supervise two or more Archival Specialists and several students engaged
in processing activities, as well as other students working on the Web
page.  Assign tasks and ensure efficient and productive workflow.

* Publicize the collection through professional newsletters, journals,
directories, and the Internet, by creating a Web page on the Hoover
Institution site and overseeing its maintenance.

* Assist Archivist in acquiring additional related collections.

* Provide reference service for the collection in consultation with the
Reference Archivist.

* Act as liaison with RFE/RL administrators and archivists.  Cooperate with
scholars and journalists in residence visiting from Radio Free Europe and
Radio Liberty.

* Work closely with Preservation Officer and Audio-Visual Specialist in
devising and implementing housing and duplication policies for more than
60,000 reels of broadcast tapes; identify other audio-visual materials and
paper-based items requiring conservation treatment.

* Perform related projects and special assignments as requested, including
the preparation of budgets and progress reports.

* Five-day workweek will include some Saturdays to supervise reference work
on the RFE/RL collection.


QUALIFICATIONS:

* Intimate knowledge of 20th century European history, with graduate degree
in history or related field preferred.

* ALA-accredited MLS degree or ACA certification as professional archivist,
or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

* Several years experience supervising and managing complex archival
projects.

* Knowledge of archival arrangement and description practices, and
experience creating finding aids.

* Knowledge of computer applications in archives, especially word
processing systems; on-line catalogs and databases such as RLIN; and Web
based programs.

* Strong reference skills, reading room experience, and ability to relate
to the public.

* Ability to work independently and as a team member, exercise good
judgment and initiative, and manage sensitive material in a confidential
manner.

* Excellent command of English and knowledge of German, Russian, or one or
more of the East European languages.

* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, analytical and
organizational skills, attention to detail, problem-solving and
interpersonal skills.

* Ability to handle e-mail and register keyboarding input for several hours
a day.

* Ability to lift 25-pound boxes and push heavily-loaded book trucks.

* Successful applicant will be asked to apply for U.S. national security
clearance.

TERM: Three-year term appointment with possibility of renewal.
Starting date: June 1, 2001.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:  Salary range for this exempt, 100% position is that
of an Associate Librarian or Librarian (2P2 or 2P3) depending on
qualifications and experience.  Excellent benefits package.
