June 1 Deadline NHPRC Electronic Records Grants

Hello! This is just a reminder that the next deadline for applying for an
electronic records grant from the National Historical Publications and
Records Commission (NHPRC) is June 1, 2001. Electronic records creation is
ubiquitous and its implications are enormous for the organizations and
individuals who create records, and to the program managers, lawyers,
accountants, auditors, journalists, advertisers, citizens, genealogists, and
scholars who use them. By extension, there are a number of unanswered
questions about how organizations, individuals, and, ultimately, society
will ensure the long-term preservation of and access to electronic records.
The NHPRC vigorously supports activities to develop solutions to ensure that
the evidence of our institutions and public and personal lives endures.

Information about applying for an NHPRC electronic records grant can be
found on the NHPRC website at http://www.nara.gov/nhprc/electron.html.
Potential applicants are encouraged to contact the NHPRC's Director for
Technology Initiatives early in the process of developing an application.
NHPRC staff will review drafts of proposals received by April 1, 2001 and
offer comments for strengthening the proposals prior to final submission.

June 1, 2001 is also the deadline for applications in response to the
Commission's call for proposals to address the need to broaden the base and
increase the level of archival expertise in the area of electronic records.
This call for proposals is in response to the recognized need to increase
the number of archivists who are equipped to work with electronic records.
It also responds to the need to increase the basic knowledge of archivists
and related professionals in general about the challenges and opportunities
information technology poses and the initiatives currently attempting to
address them. This grant cycle is the second of this three-year initiative.
Further information about this initiative can be found on the NHPRC website
at http://www.nara.gov/nhprc/erinit.html.
