Copyright Issues

Title: Clear Day

Greetings,

As copyright issues and developments are of interest to Archivists and such topics appear in this forum fairly often, I thought I'd call your attention to a rather interesting article in today's (2/21/01) Wall Street Journal on the front page--column one by Jess Bravin, staff reporter for the WSJ.

It involves the Worldwide Church of God and it's copyright concerns in court decisions regarding its material.  It has gone through the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and The Supreme Court will decide whether or not to hear the case by spring.  It could have some rather profound implications on for-profit and no-for-profit organizations and their copyrighted material.

To add even a broader appeal to this list, a federal appeals court, last week, cited our case in their decision to shut down Napster Web site's music sharing service.  The judges relied on the decision for Worldwide Church of God, for their finding that Napster could infringe copyrights even if it didn't make any money for its actions.

Who said an archivist's job is boring!??
