Job Opening: Associate Archivist/Manuscripts Cataloger, Indiana Historical Society, Indianapolis

The Indiana Historical Society is seeking candidates for the full-time
position of associate archivist/manuscripts cataloger in the manuscripts &
archives department of its library division.  Founded in 1830 and located in
Indianapolis, IHS is a private, independent, nonprofit membership
organization dedicated to collecting, preserving, and promoting Indiana's
history.   The library actively collects materials on the history of Indiana

The associate archivist/manuscripts cataloger is responsible primarily for
processing manuscripts collections and archival material; for creating
original local catalog records for manuscript collections and archival
material, and contributing them to OCLC; and for assisting with reference
duties as assigned.  A complete job description is available upon request.

Candidates should have a knowledge of American history (familiarity with
Indiana and Midwestern history desirable) as well as knowledge of library,
archives, and manuscript work.   Candidates should have the ability to
recommend conservation treatments; communicate effectively, orally and in
writing; and pay close attention to detail.

Required:  Bachelor's degree in history, American studies, or related field.
A master's degree in history, American studies, or related field with
training in archives and manuscript work; or a master's degree in library
science or archival science and background in history.  (All but thesis
acceptable with sufficient experience.)  At least one year of experience
processing collections in a manuscript or archival repository or library,
and familiarity with cataloging using OCLC or another bibliographic utility.
Experience working with word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
Preferred:  Working knowledge of Word, Excel, FrontPage, and Access.  At
least one year of cataloging experience.  One to three years processing
experience in an archives or library.

The salary range for this position starts in the high-20's; pay offered will
be commensurate with experience and skills.  IHS offers an excellent

garage for a one-time $11 fee.
