Re: Wednesday weirdness - Olympia

Yes, something did shake in Olympia. At the State Records Center building
we have hundreds or thousands of boxes that moved forward 1 - 3 inches on
their shelves, but none came down (out of 190,000). We will have to push
them back to get the orderpicker forklifts down the aisles, but given our
racks are 36 feet high, we are quite pleased. There appears to be some
shifting in the 12" thick concrete floor slab at the expansion joints, maybe
an 1/8" or so, which will may interfere with driving the orderpickers at
full speed at their extended height. One employee sustained some emotional
upset and surprise since he was working in the racking on a picker at a
higher level. He needed to walk around the block a few times and than go
home.

The Archives and Records Centers are closed today, but primarily due to the
need to keep people out of the way as other building assessments take place.
The Archives Building (underground) does not seem to be damaged.

I felt some shaking here in Bellingham, 90 miles north of Seattle, but no
damage in the immediate area. Colleagues in Seattle and Tacoma reported some
slight damage, with library shelves pulling loose from the walls and
buildings being evacuated.

My brother, who works for a "large computing firm" in Seattle, called from
work to let us know that he felt the earthquake, he was fine, and he had to
get back to work. There was no damage at his office, nor at his home in
Redmond. There was undoubtedly more significant damage in other spots; the
NY Times was reporting an hour ago that it was a 6.2, and now they're saying
it was a 7.0 and there were a few serious injuries. But don't expect the
media to wait for facts, as long as they can report SOMETHING FIRST.

Perhaps our subscriber from the Microsoft Archives can provide more details?
Just out of curiosity -- does the MS corporate archives have a disaster
plan, and is it necessary to implement it, or were you undamaged by this?
