The Ohio Historical Society seeks a candidate with energy and vision to
serve as Archivist for the Siebert Collection Digitization Project.  In this
two year position, the Siebert Project Archivist will lead a team
responsible for improving the care of and access to the Wilbur H. Siebert
manuscript collection (MSS 116). Siebert was a professor of history at the
Ohio State University who between 1891 and 1935 amassed a wealth of
information about his three research interests: the Underground Railroad,
American Loyalists, and East Florida.  The digitization project will focus
on the Underground Railroad materials, which represent one of the most
comprehensive resources in existence for study of the topic. The project is
sponsored by the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.

Responsibilities:
In consultation with other society staff, the Project Archivist will assess
the physical condition of the collection and create a detailed plan for
conserving and digitizing the Underground Railroad materials.  He or she
will reprocess and rehouse the collection, create a new electronic finding
aid, revise the bibliographic record, digitize materials, and create
descriptive metadata in accordance with established specifications and
standards.

Qualifications:  A well-qualified candidate will have a master's degree in
library or information science and at least one year's experience in an
archives or special library digitizing or processing historical collections.
He or she must have demonstrated knowledge of United States history and the
Underground Railroad.  Also required is a familiarity with digitization
hardware and software, database software, and the Dublin Core metadata
scheme. Excellent organizational, communication, and teamwork skills and
ability to use common office software are essential.

Salary:  Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
