Fwd: Cropping marks

Thomas Berry asks:

Another quick question:

What's the best way to get rid of cropping marks on photos? We found some
that appear to be some sort of wax pencil.

I'll be interested in responses to this too.

My question is whether we should get rid of such marks or see them as
part of the artefact?

We currently have a very large collection of photos from a magazine
publisher. I think we should leave the cropping marks - and let users
remove them from their copy if they so wish. (This should be
relatively easy in the digital world).

I'm assuming the wax/chinagraph pencil won't cause deterioration of the photo?

Cheers, Sue
