Re: Statistics: by day or researcher

Per your question about a researcher who spends a week, we would
count this researcher as five times (for the five days). Our library
administration has used the philosophy that use statistics are a
reflection of staff workload. I tried one time to keep track of times
that a researcher spent here but those statistics were absolutely
meaningless....if we're juggling three researchers at once, and one
spent 45 minutes, one spent 2 hours, and one spent 1 hour...what
do we say? We had 3.45 manhours of usage...but that occurred
in a 2 hour time frame??

Similarly we record the number of "items" retrieved for the user
but count this figure twice. Since Circulation Department of the
Library counts (1) checkouts, (2) checkins/reshelving, and (3)
reshelving of books used but not checked out....to justify their
staffing and budget, it made sense that since we are expending
time and energy to retrieve items and then to reshelve them that
our use of materials be multiplied by two.
