Re: Manuscript collection sources

In addition to Internet search engines such as Google and Lycos, you should
try OCLC's World Cat. Many institutions catalog primary source collections
on OCLC. To search OCLC for primary source material ONLY, you must

1. go to the "advanced search"
2. In the "Document Type" category choose - MIXED MEDIA -
3. Then enter you author, keyword or subject

Another thing to remember is that there is a limit in the effectiveness of
using bibliographic databases and search engines. Collections from smaller
institutions that do not have the resources to catalog in databases will
not be represented, nor will unprocessed collections.

It is Friday and it is after 5:00. Why am I still at work?

I receive a lot of requests to locate manuscript collections for a wide
range of individuals. Depending on what is known about the individual, I
usually start the search with the following:

1. NUCMC RLIN AMC file
2. Archives USA
3. American National Biography (multi volume set)
4.Biographical Directory of the United States Congress

Are there other major sources that I should be consulting? Many of the
individuals were active in the health industry. Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
