about network television copys

Networks distributed in the 1950s by film. Large cities got 35mm prints and
most stations got 16mm. Originally the prints had the sponsor's commercials.
For re-runs these were spliced out. Most are sold on ebay, in the 16mm
category. Many collectors buy these and make videos, which are sold in the
video category. I presume that within 6 months, DVD will be widespread. I
have not seen a Romper room in six months. But most other shows are there.
An example is the Amos & Andy show. 78 episodes were filmed, and about 70
are known to exist and can be bought on video. About 20 of those have the
original commercials. Prices for original 16mm prints over the last six
months range from $35 (for a reduction dupe) to $610 (reduction dupe with
commercials) and average $100-150 depending on the episode. In this case,
there is an amos & andy fan website with chat, and you can post questions to
very knowledgeable experts. Try Google search for any particular tv or film
serial you want, I find about 75% of the things I am looking for. Another
way to find experts is to search ebay for "Romper Room" and look at the
bidders, try contacting them. Check "completed auctions" because most
serious bidders place their bid less than a minute before the end of the
auction, a practice called "sniping."
