Major Duties:  Performs and assists in any or all of the following functions  
by applying archival principles, methods, and techniques.  Provides reference services to scholars and a wide range of the public both in the archives research facility and via phone, correspondence, fax, and email.  Searches for and recommends source materials.  Determines, advises, and enforces legal restrictions and security of materials in accordance with National Anthropological Archives (NAA) procedures.  Assists in the coordination of archives information management and reporting with regard to the archives on-line database and image-based electronic database.  Processes archival  records and collections.  Describes archival records, manuscripts, and other holdings according to NAA procedures and produces registers, inventories, and other finding aids according to professional archival standards in order to inform users of the existence and availability of collections.  Preserves archival records by implementing basic cleaning, refoldering, encapsulation, and rehousing procedures or through basic preservation copying projects or by referring work to conservators.  Provides administrative and management support to the NAA manager by maintaining the mail log and correspondence files.  Assists in the implementation and coordination of the NAA's records schedule and disposition survey.                                              
                                                                              
Qualifications Required:                                                      
A combination of education and experience may qualify you for this position.  
                                                                              
Basic requirements: successful completion of a full four-year course of   
study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher
degree with a major that included 18 semester hours in the history of the     
United States and/or in American political science or government, and 12      
semester hours in one or any combination of the following: history, American  
civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or         
government.  OR Combination of education and experience*at least 30 semester hours that included courses listed above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.  OR In addition to meeting the basic requirements, applicants must possess one (1) year of specialized experience and/or directly related education in the amounts shown below.  Education and experience may be combined to meet the total experience requirements: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree when it provided the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position or one (1) year of specialized experience at or at least equivalent to the next lower grade level. Specialized experience is experience which is in or directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.                                           
                                                                              
Knowledges, Skills and Abilities Required:                                    
Candidates must possess the Selective Placement Factor to receive             
consideration for this position and should address this in their statement of 
KSAs.                                                                         
                                                                              
1.  Knowledge of archival techniques including arrangement and description, cataloguing, and access and reference.                                        
2.  Knowledge of automated tools and technologies used to support archival    
functions.                                                                                  
                                            
Basis of Rating:                                                              
Applicants meeting basic eligibility requirements will be rated and ranked on 
the knowledges, skills and abilities, and other characteristics (KSA's)       
required to perform the duties of the position.  Please review KSA's          
carefully.  Include in the write-ups such things as experience in and out of  
Federal service that gave you the specific knowledge, skill or ability;       
objectives of your work; and evidence of your success (such as                
accomplishments, awards received, etc.)                                                                                
                                                                              
1.  Ability in cataloging records using standard professional methods,        
techniques, and tools as part of automated information management systems for collections access and maintenance.                                           
2.  Ability in applying archival methods and techniques (i.e., accessioning,  
arrangement and description, appraisal, and processing or original materials).
3.  Skill in written communication and in preparing registers, finding aids,  
and other descriptive tools and reports.                                      
4.  Skill in oral communication and interpersonal communication skills to deal
with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds.                                                                                   
                       
Pay, Benefits and Work Schedule:                                              
All Federal employees are required by PL 104-134 to have federal payments made by Direct Deposit.                                                            
                                                                              
This is a permanent, career-conditional appointment.  Selectee will be        
eligible for health and life insurance, annual (vacation) and sick leave and  
will be covered under the Federal Employees Retirement System.                                                                                     
                                                                              
This position will be filled on a full-time permanent basis.  Upon completing 
any required probationary period, the position will be permanent.                                                                              
                        
Conditions of Employment:                                                     
Under Executive Order 11935, only United States citizens and nationals        
(residents of American Samoa and Swains Island) may compete for civil service jobs.  Agencies are permitted to hire noncitizens only in very limited        
circumstances where there are no qualified citizens available for the
