POSITION: Head, M. E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and
Archives
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Head of the M. E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and
Archives Department is responsible for the leadership, development and
management of the Department. Responsibilities include developing
collections and collection policies, coordinating departmental user
services, managing budgets, training and supervising 5 FTE personnel,
fundraising, coordinating the cataloging of collections, overseeing the
processing of printed, manuscript, and archival materials. Provides
leadership for the development of digital collections and access to
digitized resources. Works with the Director of Libraries and the
Assistant Director for Collections to acquire collections that support
the University?s curricular and research interests and to seek funding
for the collections. Coordinates collection development with
library bibliographers. Serves as spokesperson to advance the status of
Albany?s special collections. Provides departmental reference
services. Manages access to special collections, including preparation of
finding aids, guides, bibliographies, hosting conferences and designing
and mounting exhibits. Reports to the Assistant Director for
Collections.
Works with the Dean and Director of Libraries and the President of the
Friends? Board to assist with activities such as lectures and fund
raising events.
Assists the Dean and Director of Libraries and others with Library
Update, the Libraries? twice yearly publication.
Library Faculty at the University at Albany, SUNY, are expected to
fulfill faculty obligations in the areas of research, publication and
service to the Libraries, University and profession, as well as specific
library assignments.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: MLS from ALA accredited school; minimum of 3 years
experience in managing and building special collections in an academic
environment; excellent oral and written communication skills;
successful supervisory experience; knowledge of digital library trends
and developments; experience in processing manuscripts and archives; and,
strong interpersonal skills. Preferred: additional graduate degree in the social sciences and
experience with Web development, digitizing collections, encoding (HTML,
XML, EAD) finding aids, and fund raising.
SALARY:
Commensurate with education and experience. Minimum for
Senior Assistant Librarian $ 41,135; minimum for Associate Librarian
$50,000.
TERMS & BENEFITS:
Twelve month appointment; sick leave and annual leave @ 1.25 days
each per month; health ,
major medical of Health Maintenance Organization. Social Security
coverage. TIAA/CREF
Teachers Retirement available (employee contribution rate =
3%).

Albany?s University Libraries are among the top 100 research libraries in
the United States. They are a highly valued partner in teaching and
research at the University, serve a campus community of 16,000 full-time
and part-time students and 2,300 faculty and staff and a broader
regional, national and international community. The Libraries
employ a dynamic and knowledgeable staff of 146 FTE and 300 part-time
student assistants to provide excellent services to a campus community
that makes heavy demands on these services. Collections total 2
million cataloged volumes and the Libraries offer a full spectrum of
resources, from rare books and manuscripts to an array of electronic
resources. Librarians work closely with teaching faculty to offer
an extensive program of user education and information literacy
instruction. The University Library on the main campus is a large
175,000 square feet, 4 story building providing seats for 1,660. It
is open 109 hours a week. It contains several fully-networked
library classrooms and laboratories, a 60 seat computer user room, a
large networked reference area, and an interactive media center.
The Thomas E. Dewey Graduate Library for Public Affairs and Policy on the
Rockefeller College campus serves the graduate schools of Criminal
Justice, Public Administration, Social Welfare and Information Science
and Policy. The New Library, opened in September 1999, on the main
campus adds 143,000 net square feet of space to the University Libraries
and houses a technologically advanced, 500,000 volume science library,
the M. E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives, and
the Library?s Preservation Department.
The University Libraries are fully automated. ADVANCE
Web, the Libraries? ADVANCE system contains information on all cataloged
holdings and is Internet accessible. The Libraries provide an
extensive array of electronic and networked resources and Web-accessible
services. They are members of the Association of Research
Libraries, The Research Libraries Group and The Center for Research
