Watermarks for digital photos

A couple of folks have asked that I post to the list the results of my
request for examples of digital watermarks (for which thanks very
much, by the way; the admin P-T-B were very impressed and
agreed with our decision to watermark digital photos!)

Anyway, here's a compilation I did for those same admin. P-T-B of
the examples and some other relevant information. Thanks again
to everyone who responded!

COMPILATION BEGINS:

This is how you select pictures: Just choose "digital pictures" at
the top of the screen and then type in a term next to it, like cats or
airplanes or landscapes. You just keep clicking on the image and
when you see the largest one, it's got the watermark.

At the Australian War Memorial site (http://www.awm.gov.au/) under
databases you can find photographic database and see how they
do their watermarks.

Try the NLM's Images from the History of Medicine:

These images are low res jpegs, visibly watermarked using
Photoshop layer function, and invisibly watermarked using
Digimarc. Hope this helps.

The Dallas Public Library adds watermarks to scanned photos,
though we didn't always. If you want to look at some, our catalog
can be found at [http://catalog.dallaslibrary.org]. Login as "Guest."
On the search page, you can limit the search for photographs only
(we have app. 4000 online so far).

[HERE'S THE MESSAGE ABOUT THE WEAKNESS IN THE
DIGIMARK SYSTEM]

[...]is also found in the Digimark system at least as applied by
Paintshop Pro, as well as what I have been able to figure out about
Photoshop's capabilities in this area (limited, to be sure). By
cutting, pasting and then saving as a different file type, the
Digimark watermark disappears! I know it's supposed to be
integrated and spread throughout the image file and I can't explain
why this 'end around' works, but it does. I was most disappointed
to discover this with help from our head IT guy. At this point, a
watermark provides limited protection. Mounting JPEG images
means that those who want a monitor quality image can rip us off,
but those wanting to make publication quality print copies will have
to come to us for TIFF files or other higher quality duplications.

Finally, take a look at three or our other, early efforts in this regard.
The first was done because these images are unique; these are the
only ones in the world. The second was because there was such a
great demand for these images but we knew they were
copyrighted. The third was done because the photographers on
this project wanted to see their pictures on the web, but they are
still in business and we didn't want to put their pictures out without
some sort of copyright notice. It's the least satisfactory of all of
them, IMO.
