women collections available

NEWLY OPENED

In honor of Women's History Month, The Archives for Research on Women and
Gender, a unit of the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Archives,
announces the opening of four new important women's history collections to
researchers. Recently processed, under a grant from the National Historic
Publications and Records Commission, the four collections include: the
Women's Overseas Service League Records, the Ernestine Glossbrenner Papers,
the San Antonio Area Council of Girl Scouts Records and the Planned
Parenthood of San Antonio and South Central Texas Records.
The records of Women's Overseas Service League, a women veterans
organization founded in 1921, contain 58 linear feet, and date
from1910-2000. The collection documents the everyday business and functions
of the organization. The records include correspondence, minutes, reports,
photographs, scrapbooks and printed materials. Insight into the
organization is offered from a national and local perspective. The
collection illustrates the fundamental operations that were carried out by
the members of WOSL.
The papers of Ernestine Glossbrenner, an educator and Texas State
Representative from 1977 until her retirement in 1993, contain 8 linear
feet, and date from 1948-1999. The collection documents the State
Representative's career through correspondence, legal documentation,
photographs, awards and printed materials. The papers also include
materials of her time as an educator before assuming office in 1977. The
records of the San Antonio Area Council of Girl Scouts contain 18.5 linear
feet, and date from1926-2000. These records document the organization
through correspondence, minutes, reports, photographs, scrapbooks and
printed materials. The materials present a complete picture of
administrative activities carried out by board and committee members. In
this respect, the records show major changes that occurred within the
organization over time. The collection is strong in offering information on
the Area Council's programs and activities, which include events in San
Antonio and camp activities in the surrounding area.
The records of Planned Parenthood of San Antonio and South Central Texas
contain 8 linear feet, and date from 1931-1999. The collection documents
the organization's operation from its formation, and includes
correspondence, minutes, reports, photographs, scrapbooks and printed
materials. Highlights of the collection include administrative activities,
programs and services offered to local and regional communities, how public
opinion of the organization changed and regional and national developments
of sexual and family issues.
Finding Aids for these collections will soon be available online at
