Slide Cleaning Response

Though I didn't get feedback from anyone on the list I did hear back promptly from Steve Dalton at the Northeast Document Conservation Center in Andover, MA in response to my call. He checked with his photograph conservator and she recommended ONLY cleaning the slide with a soft brush to remove most of the dust and dirt. (My question dealt with cleaning 2x2 slides which had been stored in a moldy trunk though most slides were only dusty).

Unless mold is directly present on the slide emulsion itself it's best to leave it alone, he advised. There is always the chance that even an "archivally safe" cleaning agent may leave some sort of residue on the slide. Same goes for negatives, etc.

An FYI for your next cache of priceless basement slides hidden inside the secret moldy trunk!
