re. use of postcards on a commercial website

Many thanks to those on the list who responded to my query about allowing
use of and charging a "use fee" for use of images from our collection on a
commercial (real estate) website. The consensus appears to be that as a
public library we may be on shaky ground in having a mandatory use fee for
images from our collections. The "we already pay taxes, why should we pay
more to use something form the public library" argument by patrons. Many
suggested, however, that we strongly suggest a donation to our Friends of
the Library, so that it can continue to provide us with the equipment to
make scanning and dissemination of images from our collection possible. We
also require any users to include a credit line beneath any photo they use
in a publication/website. A number of people also pointed out that use of
our images on a commercial website is good publicity, provided that we are
credited as the source of the image.

After discussing this with my director, we have decided to go in the
direction of a donation to the Friends and a credit line rather than a
mandatory fee. Thanks again to all who responded.
