Digital imaging terminology

Can anyone help me with some digital imaging terminology? If someone
requests a digital image, I want to be able to ask them to identify their
specifications. I don't (and won't) need to know what any of this means
for the moment; I just want to know what to ask them. I presume the
question would be somthing like, "Tell me your preferred format, file size,
resolution, and compression ratio." Are those the particulars to ask for?
Are there others? What about color or gray scale specifications (bit
size?)?

Should I ask a complementary set of questions about their output
intentions, and if so, what would those questions be?

Thanks in advance for any help.
