Civil War Bullets

A colleague has asked me to forward a question to the list.

He's assisting a local historical society with an exhibit that includes Civil War artifacts. The artifacts include a number of cap & ball style bullets, some of which appear to be intact - cap, ball, cartridge, & all. Could such old ordinance still be live and pose any safety risk? Are these bullets safe to display, or could they be if special precautions were taken? Do any members of the list have experience with this sort of exhibit? Thanks.
