Re: preserving food--anecdotal

I found a piece of anniversary cake in a collection that's been here in our care for almost twenty years. I sure was surprised to find it. And even more surprised to find that the cake piece was actually cataloged....The cake is close to 50 years old now and it's like a small hockey puck. The air is rather dry here in Sacramento, and the cake has seemed to petrify all on its own. I do worry a tad about critters seeking it out, but so far it seems not to have attracted any bugs. Must not have been very good cake.
