Re: preserving food--anecdotal
The PBS American Experience documentary on Joe DiMaggio last evening
included footage of 2 sisters talking about a "perfectly preserved" piece of
wedding cake from Joe and Dorothy Arnold's reception that they found in
their mother's closet after many years. I think they said it had only been
wrapped in wax paper and sealed using 2 paper clips. Not recommending this
technique, just passing along trivia for you baseball fans out there!

I found a piece of anniversary cake in a collection that's been here
in our care for almost twenty years. I sure was surprised to find it. And
even more surprised to find that the cake piece was actually
cataloged....The cake is close to 50 years old now and it's like a small
hockey puck. The air is rather dry here in Sacramento, and the cake has
seemed to petrify all on its own. I do worry a tad about critters seeking
it out, but so far it seems not to have attracted any bugs. Must not have
been very good cake.
