Re: Book humor

Actually, as someone who once - a looong time ago - served an internship at
New York's Transit Museum, I was told that it was possible for the MTA to
track the use of the free, unlimited use Metrocards issued to employees.
So, the capability seems to exist. Before I stoke any conspiracy fires,
though, let me say that the MTA does not, to my knowledge, track individual
commuters. It would be a lot of effort for no gain that I can figure out.
Besides, there is now way of linking an individual's identity to a card, as
no personal information is recorded during the sale of cards.

Her episode makes me think of the friend of mine who refused to buy a
Metrocard, the multiple ride passes the MTA started selling here in NY a
few
years ago. He was concerned they would be able to track his movements.

He was never able to satisfactorily explain to me why they would be so
interested in his commute.
