The problem with that is the advertising is now out of context. And Kevan
is talking more about newspapers and other periodicals rather than
scholarly journals. But in any case I agree with Kevan. Nineteenth century
photographers advertisements provide lots of clues about the photographer.
Also the placement and size of an ad in relation to other ads is important.

personally I would love to be able to purchase duplicate rolls of certain
19th c. Texas newspapers or city directories but the cost is outrageous. I
don't need silver-halide, diazo will do.
