More on N. Baker and Double Fold

The Newsday article posted earlier today contained a link to Mr. Baker's
American Newspaper Repository. Because the link was buried so deep in the
article here it is again
http://www.gwi.net/~dnb/newsrep.html

The website provdes a list of the newspapers saved. Be sure to check them
out.

Here are some choice excerpts from the website

"In their place they offer microfilm--often woefully inadequate
(edge-blurred, faded), textually divergent (different libraries collected
different editions of the same daily paper), gappy, black-and-white
microfilm photographed in the forties and fifties by in-house labs at
libraries and by commercial companies such as Recordak and University
Microfilms."

"Since its introduction in the thirties, microfilm has demonstrated itself
to be, as a storage medium, less durable than supposedly ephemeral
groundwood pulp paper--even the two-decades old polyester-based films are
vulnerable to fungal attack and silver-halide blemishing. "

"Researchers who submit a letter of inquiry can use the collection by
appointment."

"The repository is supported by private individuals, and by grants from the
MacArthur Foundation and the Knight Foundation."
