Job Announcement--Washington, DC

Archives Technician
ZAI/AMELEX (EOE) for the U.S. Mint, Historical Collection
Washington, DC

Project Description:
The U.S. Mint Archives Project has two primary goals. The first is to
digitize and then store historically significant U.S. Mint documents in an
electronic database with searching capabilities. The second is to create a
physical archive out of the materials in the historical collection. Through
the U.S. Mint's internal and external web sites, the digital collection will
be accessible to U.S. Mint staff and its customers and will assist in the
expansion of current coinage markets. Currently, as materials are
requested, the time spent finding information is so great that little time
remains for historical analysis and research. To streamline the search and
retrieval process, the Archives Project will address the following project
objectives: to improve access to materials through digitization and subject
indexing; to provide historical materials for the creation of electronic
resources such as CD-ROMs; and to provide educational professionals with
U.S. Mint materials that can be incorporated into educational programs.

Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Archivist/Project Manager, processes, arranges,
and describes the U.S. Mint historical collection (monographs, documents,
still images, and microform). Prepares and maintains electronic finding
aids according to established local practice, including EAD encoding.
Participates in the ongoing retrospective conversion of the collection's
subject headings and its controlled vocabulary. Assists with original
cataloging, preservation, and digital conversion of the collection. Assists
in planning, directing, and reviewing the work of Scanning Operators.
Special projects and other related duties as assigned.

Required qualifications:
Preference is given to persons with an MLS from an accredited institution
with coursework and formal training in archival theory and practice. A
degree in another academic discipline with archives and manuscripts training
or certification with experience in processing archival collections will
receive every consideration. Working knowledge of MARC, LC Subject
Headings, AACR2, and other LC cataloging standards. Familiarity with basic
preservation standards for archival and manuscript collections.
Demonstrated knowledge of American history and a broad knowledge in the
humanities. Competence in basic software applications in a Windows
environment is a must. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively,
both orally and in writing. Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and
attention to details. Ability to work well as a member of a group and
individually in a demanding and rapidly changing environment.

Highly desired:
Working knowledge of imaging and scanning projects. Two years of relevant
professional experience (internships and part-time positions are
applicable). Involvement in professional organizations.

Salary:
$30,000 - $37,000 (plus benefits)
