Re: Scrapbook Preservation via Microfilm

Regarding the microfilming of challenging material such as scrapbooks, I
have experimented with an exposure/processing combination that provides
absolutely superior halftone results. It involves slightly overexposing the
camera master then processing the camera film in a low gamma reversal
process to obtain a master with positive polarity. There are two major
advantages to this approach in addition to achieving really high image
quality. First it requires only one exposure setting and secondly the
camera positive is much easier to inspect than a negative. Duplicates are
made on Kodak Direct Duplicating Film, Type 2470.

Two downsides of this method are: It requires a competent photographic
technician to set up, monitor and maintain the process and that the bleach
(which contains ferrocyanide or dichromate compounds) is costly/difficult to
dispose of.
