seeking applications and nominations for the position of Executive Director.
Funded by a variety of public and private grants, the Library and Archives
is a non-profit 501(c)3, nonpartisan organization housed at the New
Hampshire State Library in Concord. The organization seeks to provide a
central facility and resources where historians, candidates, the media and
the general public can find ready access to New Hampshire's voting
procedures and political history, and maintains the only comprehensive
collection of election campaign materials from half a century of New
Hampshire presidential primary history.
The Executive Director is supported by - and reports directly to - a
Board of Directors, comprised of business, political and academic leaders
throughout New Hampshire. He/She will be responsible for leading the
day-to-day operations, supervising employees and consultants, and leading a
variety of research and educational initiatives. The Executive Director will
steer the continued development of the Library and Archives, and represents
the organization in media relations, collections acquisition, and building
relationships with other libraries and organizations. A key task will be the
integration of emerging technologies and electronic resources with the
traditional collections of the Library and Archives, which include rare
manuscripts, photographs, and other artifacts pertaining to the presidential
primary.
The successful candidate for the position will have an advanced
degree, preferably an MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or MA in
history or other relevant discipline, and a minimum 5 years experience in
administration of a library or archives, with demonstrated ability to manage
people and projects effectively. Preference will be given to candidates with
academic research experience and expertise in U.S. political history,
particularly the presidential primary.

Reports to: The Executive Director of the Library and Archives of
New Hampshire's Political Tradition reports directly to the Board of
Directors through the Vice President of Operations. However, it has been
agreed by the Board of Directors that the Executive Director should seek the
advice and counsel of the NH State Librarian and the NH State Archivist on
matters pertaining to the materials and collections of the Political
Library.

Responsibilities: The Executive Director is responsible for leading
the day-to-day operations of the Political Library, supervising all its
employees, and directing the Library toward accomplishing the goals and
objectives of the organization as defined by the Strategic Plan, 2001-2005.

The Executive Director serves as a central point of communication
among and between all Board members, ensuring that they are kept informed of
the Library's activities. When necessary, the Executive Director may also be
called upon by the President of the Board to assist in developing agendas
for meetings of the Board of Directors.

The Executive Director is the primary individual with fiduciary
responsibility for the organization, authorized as the sole signatory of
checks for amounts less than $1,000, and co-signatory (with the Treasurer or
the President of the Board) of all checks of $1,000 or more. To ensure sound
fiscal management, the incumbent will develop an annual budget of the
Political Library, including a budget for both operations and endowment,
which will be presented annually for approval by the Board of Directors. The
Executive Director will also support the fundraising efforts of the
organization, including the identification of funding opportunities, grant
writing, and the stewardship of all grants received.
In the area of external relations, the Executive Director represents
the organization in media relations, collections acquisition, and building
relationships with other libraries and organizations, including political
entities at the state, local and federal level. With the aid of the
Assistant Director, this position is responsible for ensuring that all
correspondences of the Political Library are conducted in a timely and
professional manner.

The Executive Director is also responsible for identifying, hiring
and supervising consultants of the Political Library as needed for projects,
initiatives, and special events represented in the organization's strategic
plan, including the technology initiative and the Library's information
kiosk located at the Manchester International Airport.

Qualifications: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or MA in
history or other relevant discipline. Minimum 5 years experience in
administration of a library or archives, with demonstrated ability to manage
people and projects effectively. Knowledge of 20th century American
political history, particularly the presidential primary, highly desirable.
