THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY
The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and
research at the University, has more than 10.5 million volumes housed in
the Sterling Memorial Library and 16 school and departmental libraries. It
employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE who have the
opportunity to work with the highest caliber of faculty and students,
participate on committees and are involved in other areas of staff
development. A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books and
manuscripts to rapidly expanding network of electronic resources,
constitutes one of Yale' s distinctive strengths. The Library is engaged in
numerous ambitious projects such as the renovation of the main library
building, the complete retrospective conversion of the Library's catalog,
and various automation projects, which include network access to scholarly
information and preservation imaging. Yale is a member of the Program for
Cooperative Cataloging and contributes to the NACO and BIBCO Programs.

THE BEINECKE RARE BOOK AND MANUSCRIPT LIBRARY
The Beinecke Library is Yale's principal repository for literary papers and
early manuscripts and rare books. In addition to its distinguished General
Collection, the library houses the Osborn Collection, noted for its British
literary and historical manuscripts, and outstanding special collections
devoted
to American literature, German literature and Western Americana. For

The Manuscript Unit is responsible for accessioning, processing, and
cataloging the library's manuscript, archival and non-print collections, as
well as for their conservation and preservation. The staff consists of the
Unit Head, 4 Archivists, 2 Archives Assistants, student assistants, and
special project personnel.


RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the supervision of the Manuscript Unit Head, processes collections of
American and European literary and historical manuscripts. Prepares and
maintains electronic finding aids according to established local practice,
including EAD encoding. Performs original cataloging in the MARC format for
single items and small, non-archival groups, as well as for large
collections. Participates in the ongoing retrospective conversion of the
library's Manuscripts Card Catalog. May assist with preparation of
collections for preservation microfilming or digital conversion.  Other
projects as assigned. Plans, directs, and reviews the work of processing
assistants and student assistants. Participates in the library's planning
activities and is expected to be active professionally.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required: MLS or equivalent ALA-accredited degree, with formal training in
archival theory and practice. Two years of relevant professional experience
required for appointment at Librarian II rank.
Familiarity with the MARC format, LCSH, AACR2, Hensen's APPM, and other LC
cataloging standards. Familiarity with automated library information
management systems, such as Endeavor or RLIN. Familiarity with basic
preservation and conservation standards for archival and manuscript
collections. Demonstrated knowledge of American or European literature or
history of the 18th through the 20th century, and broad knowledge in the
humanities. Good reading knowledge of at least one modern European
language, preferably French or German. Spanish or Polish also desirable.
Demonstrated facility with microcomputers and basic software applications
in a Windows environment. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively,
both orally and in writing. Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and
attention to detail. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a
production oriented, team environment.  Preferred: Experience processing
and cataloging modern literary or historical manuscripts and archival
collections. Experience creating MARC records in the Mixed Materials or
Visual Materials format.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Competitive salary and rank are based upon the successful candidate's
qualifications and experience.Salary: $38,600 minimum.  Full benefits
package including 22 vacation days; 18 holiday, recess and personal days;
comprehensive health care; TIAA/CREF or Yale retirement plan. The
