Film Scanner and Magic Lantern Slide

The Nikon LS4000 is coming out this month. It is far better (clearer scans)
than units costing five times more. It is 4000dpi and can batch scan groups
of 50 slides at a time, in 38 seconds each, give you a whopping 48 meg file,
and it also has an infra-red scanner that looks at the surface of the film
for dust and automatically retouches it. There is a long waiting list for
the units, so it may not be available right away. It works with Macintosh
and PC. If you need to buy a dedicated computer, consider the G4 first.
The Nikon website description is http://www.nikon.co.uk/ls4000.htm The
Nikon includes sophisticated color correction software for faded originals.
A great review with examples is at
http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=001Kpy I have a thread
on a discussion group about the use of this for scanning old Kodachrome.
evidently the dust sensor has difficulty with Kodachrome and with black &
white films, because they are opaque to IR. The thread is at
http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=001Kpy If this is not
good enough, you need a drum scanner.

I an considering putting a 4x5 digital camera back on a Polaroid MP4 copy
camera with an outstanding lens like a Nikkor Apo-Macro 130mm. I think I
could use cross-polarized light. and a vacuum easel. This could also scan
-- you guessed it -- NEWSPAPERS!! anybody have any comments - please!

About the Lantern Slide projector, there is a whole internet group of
collectors and do-it-yourselfers. Their URL is
magic_lantern-subscribe@yahoogroups.com Also nearby in Seattle is the HQ of
the national Lantern Slide Society, they publish a newsletter, let me know
if you want the address.
