TITLE:     Assistant University Archivist

LOCATION:     Manuscripts, Special Collections, and University Archives
Division, Allen Library, University of Washington

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The University of Washington Libraries seeks an archivist to participate in
a dynamic, user-oriented archives program in a large academic research
library.   The University Archives consists of approximately 12,000 cubic
feet of public records plus substantial faculty papers.  Located in the
center of the Seattle campus, the University Archives is part of an ARL
library serving 35,000 students, 3,500 faculty and 12,000 staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the general direction of the University Archivist, the Assistant
Archivist is responsible for the daily administration of the University
Archives' public record collections.   Oversees accessioning procedure for
recently acquired records and appraises accessions to determine permanent
retention.  Engages in collection development to acquire the most
significant materials for documenting the history of the UW campus.  Trains,
supervises and evaluates staff and student assistants.  Performs reference
service and participates actively with other division staff in setting
priorities and establishing policies.

QUALIFICATIONS:   Required:  (1) Graduate degree from a program accredited
by the American Library Association, and equivalent graduate library
science/information studies degree, or graduate degree in history or related
field.  (2) Knowledge of
archival principles and practices with a minimum one year of archival
experience.
(3) Technological expertise encompassing awareness of issues involved with
archiving electronic records and knowledge of computer applications in
archives.
(4)  Demonstrated ability to work effectively with library and university
colleagues, donors, and users.  (5)  Strong oral and written communication,
organizational, interpersonal and supervisory skills.  Preferred:   (1)
Familiarity with HTML, SGML, and Encoded Archival Description (EAD).  (2)
Experience in a university or large research institution.

SALARY:    $35,000 minimum.  Starting salary to be commensurate with
qualification and background.

BENEFITS:  Participation in the University of Washington Retirement Plan

Investments) on a matching basis.  Generous vacation; sick leave at the rate
of 12 working days per year.  Excellent medical, dental and life insurance
plans.  No state or local income tax.
