Re: Reasons to use gloves

A search on the Northeast Document Conservation Center
(http://www.nedcc.org/) and using the terms oils and gloves turns up several
short reasons, but nothing truly definitive.

they may be important individuals but the rules are in place for a reason to
preserve and protect the materials. Yes gloves can be clumsy AND YOU MIGHT
tear a page, but if a patron sees them not wearing them will cause the
patron to eventually ask "why aren't they wearing gloves". These individuals
whether they know it or not are setting an example for others.

To illustrate the damage that can be caused by handling materials with
ungloved hands take a piece of silver and lightly touch it with your unclean
finger, set it aside and eventually (not sure how long)your fingerprint will
tarnish the silver. It will be clearly visible.
