Reykjavik Muncipal Archives: May ART Meeting

ALL WELCOME: MAY ARCHIVE ROUND TABLE MEETING

PRESERVING THE PAST AND THEN WHAT?
EXHIBITING ARCHIVES TO THE PUBLIC AT THE REYKJAVIK MUNICIPAL ARCHIVES

Marilyn Pettit, Director, University Archives and Columbiana Library of Columbia University will introduce Svanhildur. Please mark your calendar and join us MONDAY May 14 for this international theme meeting.

SVANHILDUR BOGADOTTIR, city archivist and director of Reykjavik Municipal Archives, will present a short talk about the Reykjavik Municipal Archives and its responsibilities, work and international cooperation. Her presentation will focus on how archivists can introduce the wealth of the archives to the public. She and colleagues from seven European archives are working on a project to present to the public the treasures of the archives and how a single document can have a whole story behind it. She will discuss her research on the use of the reading room and how the archives can work on being less intimidating.

In addition, Svanhildur will talk about exhibitions of archives and her experience working on two different exhibits of the Reykjavik City Archives. The first exhibit dealt with young people in Reykjavik in the 20th century and attracted large media attention and a record number of visitors. The second was a smaller low-budget exhibition about the making of the harbor. That exhibit unexpectedly attracted much interest and was sent to Spain and Canada and will be set up again in Reykjavik later this year. She hopes her presentation will lead to interesting discussions on these matters.

Svanhildur Bogadottir was born in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1962. She finished her BA degree in history and comparative literature from the University of Iceland in 1985, MA degree in history and a certificate in archival management from New York University in 1987. With her studies she completed oral history interviews for the National Museum of Iceland, worked in the Archives of Trinity Church in NYC, the Archives of YMCA of Greater New York as well as doing internships in other archives. Svanhildur has been city archivist and director of Reykjavik Municipal Archives since 1987. Her BA thesis "Conditions of Trawlermen * changes with modern trawlers and laws about working hours " was published in 1988. Svanhildur has written several articles in magazines and journals, taught courses on record management and archives and given presentations both in Iceland and abroad. She was one of the founders of the Icelandic Records Management Association in 1988 and it's president 1989-1991, vice-president 1997-1998, and has been editor of the journal of IRMA since 1997. She has served on several committees in Iceland, dealing with archives and records management. Svanhildur was one of the editors for a project of the archives of the cultural cities of Europe in the year 2000, which resulted in a book and an Internet exhibition. She is a member of the Presidential Committee of the DACE project of the capitals of Europe and was last year elected as a member of the board for the Association of municipal archives within the International Council of Archives.
